So, this is what I've been running and it pounds face.
BA and Deathwing get blown away and other Space Marine armies go down quicker than a prom date.

  1. So, the only question I have is, what about hordes? Tau armies rarely have the mass of firepower to concentrate on taking down, say, huge mobs of boyz or swarms of termagants, which is why the Hammerhead comes along. How well do you find your army deals with large numbers of individually weak units, as compared with small numbers of quite strong ones?

  2. I would say this is tau's second weakest point. VOF and SOF are pitted directly against eachother in our codex. To fit in reliable anti horde you must sacrifice sure anti vehicle. Many argue for blade storms but they are a weak compromise.

The only way ive managed to do so is with a highly experimental stealthsuit only list that focuses on melta firepower. Burst cannons are extremely prevalent and so are carbines so hordes are covered. I think i had like 9 melta units in their. 3 ionheads fill in an anti horde/transport capacity nicely.

This list however is very experimental and needs testing

  3. I'd be very interested in seeing how a list like that performs. My first instinct is to write it off; I've had too much trouble trying to put down Marines, and especially those damnable FNP Blood Angels, to put much faith in torrenting burst cannons at them. But it's entirely possible that I just haven't thrown enough firepower at them, and units like them, to really see the value of it.

I will say this, though. Given the short range of the burst cannon, and the vulnerability of Tau to close combat, you're going to need to be very good at eyeballing ranges to keep yourself in range to threaten but out of charge/rapid fire range in return.

  5. So I've been playing this quiet a bit.
It kills everything. The one thing I've learned is proper Kroot positioning is vital verse DOA armies.

So far it's cleaned house on SM, and face-pounded Deathwing which had been my greatest weakness.
